Methodology
How scoring works
Every rated product gets one score from 0 to 100. Here’s what goes into it.
- 50%
Nutrition
Sugar, saturated fat and salt per 100 g, judged against the UK Food Standards Agency traffic-light thresholds. Drinks use the separate per-100 ml thresholds. The more a product goes over a threshold, the more it loses.
- 25%
Processing
The product’s NOVA group, from unprocessed foods to ultra-processed products.
- 25%
Additives
Each additive is assessed as high, moderate, low or no concern. Higher-concern additives take more points off.

When data is missing
Nutrition is required. If a product doesn’t have enough nutrition data, we don’t rate it rather than guess. If processing or additive data is missing, the score is calculated from the parts we have, re-weighted.
Where the data comes from
Product data comes from Open Food Facts contributors, made available under the Open Database License (ODbL), and from USDA FoodData Central (public domain). Scores are Bhojan’s own calculation, not Open Food Facts’.
Still evolving
[PLACEHOLDER] The weights are our own modelling choice and are being reviewed by nutrition experts. When the method changes, we version it so older scores aren’t silently reinterpreted.
